I’m speaking at the White House because the president believes we need to do more to make sure that our children, our families are safe from gun violence. And I want to say very clearly that if Congress doesn’t act, the president will. Today, the president is announcing a new task force to come up with new ideas on how to reduce gun violence. The president and I believe there are common sense steps that can be taken in the short term to reduce gun violence.

Vice President Joe Biden, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is an influential voice on gun control and has spoken out forcefully against the NRA. They have been for decades, influencing politics and policy from the federal level to state legislatures, and they do so with money and muscle. But they are not the only game in town. Another gun rights group, the Second Amendment Foundation, is also politically active, but it does not rely on contributions from members or corporate sponsors.

Vice President Joe Biden, who is in a tight race with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for the presidency, has a history of supporting gun control legislation. In the 1970s, Biden was a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and led efforts to ban the importation of certain types of semi-automatic weapons. He supported the Brady Bill of 1993, which mandated a five-day waiting period for all firearm purchases and background checks on purchasers. Biden also voted for the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994, which banned some semi-automatic weapons and their accessories.
