10 tips to help you survive an emerging coronavirus pandemic
1. Avoid contact with other people, especially if they are coughing or sneezing.
2. Throw away any associated objects, such as clothes and bedding, which have come in contact with a person who is infected with a coronavirus infection.
3. If you do not have access to a mask, cover your nose and mouth with a wet cloth when you cough or sneeze, then dispose of the cloth after one use.
4. Wash hands thoroughly for 20 seconds or more with soap and water or wash them with alcohol-based hand sanitizer before preparing food and/or eating food prepared by others; wash hands thoroughly after contact with respiratory secretions, blood or any other bodily fluids.
5. Avoid touching your eyes and mouths and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze; dispose of the tissue after one use.
6. If you must go outside during an outbreak, wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth, goggles to protect your eyes and a waterproof gown.
7. Eat canned food, drink bottled water and avoid raw foods from locations where there is an outbreak of pandemic illness or where the power supply has been disrupted significantly by flooding or earthquake.
8. If water supplies are cut off for more than 24 hours, boil tap water before drinking.
9. Do not cook foods using gas flame; place food in the oven to cook instead.
10. Plan for an extended period without power, water and other vital services by stocking up on canned and dry goods that do not require refrigeration or cooking as well as bottled water and a battery-powered radio and flashlights with spare.
