The Perimeter of a Triangle

A triangle is a geometrical shape that is made up of three sides. It is a three-dimensional shape that has three edges and vertices. A triangle is also known as the trigon or a polygon. Like every other shape in geometry, a triangle also comprises its area and perimeter. The perimeter of a triangle is the total area of the region of the outer boundaries. Mathematically, the perimeter of a triangle is written as, a + b + c where a, b and c are the three sides of the triangle.

Imagine that you are asked to find the length of the outer boundary of a park that is triangular, what will you do? To find the length of the outer boundary, you must be aware of the perimeter of a triangle. A triangle is classified into various types based on the length of the sides and their angles. Some of the types of triangles are as follows, scalene triangle, isosceles triangle, equilateral triangle, and many more. In this article, we shall cover various types of topics related to the triangle. Some of them are scalene triangles, examples based on the perimeter of a triangle, properties of a scalene triangle, and do a detailed analysis about these topics.

What is a Scalene Triangle?

As mentioned above, a triangle is classified into various types based on the length of the sides and measurements of its angle. Based on the length of sides, a triangle is classified into three major types. They are the scalene triangle, isosceles triangle, and equilateral triangle. We are aware of the fact that a triangle is composed of three sides which may be equal or unequal. A scalene triangle is a type of triangle which has three unequal sides. This means that the three sides of a triangle are of different measurements. Similarly, a type of triangle which has three equal sides is known as the equilateral triangle and a triangle that has two equal sides is known as the isosceles triangle. The perimeter of a scalene triangle possesses the formula for a basic triangle, i.e. a + b + c. We shall discuss the properties of a scalene triangle in the next section.

Properties of a Scalene Triangle

To recall, a scalene triangle is a type of triangle which has three unequal sides. The following are the properties of a scalene triangle briefly.

  1. A scalene triangle consists of three sides. Each side is of different lengths.
  2.  Similarly, it consists of three angles of different measurements.
  3.  A scalene triangle has no line of symmetry or symmetrical lines. They do not comprise any parallel or congruent or equal sides.
  4.  The interior angles of a scalene triangle can be distinguished into three types. They are obtuse angles, right angles, and acute angles.
  5.  A type of angle having the measurements of exactly 90 degrees is defined as the right angle. Similarly, an angle measuring less than 90 and more than 0 degrees is defined as an acute angle.

Some Examples based on the Perimeter of a Triangle

The mathematical formula to calculate the perimeter of a triangle is a + b + c where a, b and c are the three sides of a triangle. Some examples based on the perimeter of a triangle are mentioned below:

Example 1: Find the perimeter of a triangle if the sides of it are 4 cm, 6 cm, and 8 cm respectively.

Solution: Given that,

A = 4 cm

B = 6 cm

C = 8 cm

Using the formula of the perimeter of triangle = a + b + c.

4 cm + 6 cm + 8 cm = 18 cm

Therefore the perimeter of the triangle for the given length of sides is equivalent to 18 cm.
